Project Space Model

Project Spaces

A Project Space is the organizational unit used within BioHPC for Department of Biology employee research activities. Each Project Space corresponds to an approved research project and provides shared project storage, user membership, resource accounting, and access to shared compute resources. Only registered BioHPC users can apply for Project Space membership.

What a Project Space contains

A Project Space is a shared project area that provides storage, user management, accounting, and access to shared compute resources for an approved Department of Biology employee research project.

Project directory

Shared project storage for data, code, intermediate outputs, and research results.

Shared compute access

Access to shared compute resources for approved Department of Biology employees in the Project Space.

Employee membership

A defined list of approved Department of Biology employees, group members, and Technical Contacts.

Resource accounting

Storage usage and compute consumption can be understood and reported at Project Space level.

Membership management

Membership follows PI or authorized Technical Contact approval and project needs.

PI responsibility

The approved Department of Biology PI owns the Project Space and remains responsible for usage, access, and compliance.

Why create multiple Project Spaces?

An approved Department of Biology PI may use multiple Project Spaces to keep research activity organized, accountable, and easier to manage over time.

Separate research projects

Different scientific projects can be organized independently.

Separate funding sources

Project Spaces can align with grants, Department of Biology groups, or funding allocations.

Separate project teams

Different Department of Biology teams may require separate membership and access control.

Separate accounting

Storage usage and compute consumption can be tracked independently.

Long-term organization

Projects can remain clearly separated over time while still belonging to the same PI.

PI and Technical Contact model

The approved Department of Biology PI remains the owner and responsible party for the Project Space. A PI may designate one or more Department of Biology employee Technical Contacts to assist with administration.

  • Technical Contacts may receive notifications.
  • They may assist with administration and request review.
  • They may approve requests on behalf of the PI when authorized.
  • Technical Contacts do not replace PI responsibility.

Need a Project Space?

Department of Biology employee research groups can create one or more Project Spaces to organize project storage, access to shared compute resources, user membership, and resource accounting.

Project Spaces should normally be requested by an approved Department of Biology Principal Investigator. Technical Contacts may submit requests when acting on behalf of the PI.

BioHPC users become fully operational after their BioHPC account has been created and they have been approved for at least one Project Space. Membership requests require approval from the Project Space owner, either the PI or an authorized delegate.
